Your Level 5 Leadership Development Journey

You cannot skip levels. A highly capable individual (Level 1) cannot jump straight to Level 5 executive. Collins is clear: fully developed Level 5 leaders embody all five layers of the pyramid.

But you can develop the characteristics. Here's your roadmap:

Window and Mirror Habit

When something goes well this week, publicly credit 3 specific people by name and describe exactly what they did
Write down 3 things I could have done differently in last week's setback BEFORE discussing external factors with anyone
Practice saying "We succeeded because of..." instead of "I achieved..." at least 5 times this week

Language Audit

Record myself in 3 meetings this week and count every time I say "I" vs "we" - aim for 3:1 ratio minimum
Catch myself using "I decided" and immediately rephrase to "the team concluded" or "we determined" - do this 10 times
Ask a trusted colleague to signal me (privately agreed gesture) every time I take credit in meetings for one week

Brutal Feedback

Schedule 15-min coffee chats with 3 colleagues and ask: "What's one thing I do that suggests I'm more focused on my success than the organisation's?"
Listen to their answers without defending or explaining - just say "Thank you, that's helpful" and write down what they said
Review the feedback and identify the one behaviour I'll change this month - write it down and share it with my team

Build My Successor

Identify the person on my team who could replace me and schedule monthly development sessions with them starting this quarter
Delegate one strategic decision to them this month that I'd normally make myself - give them full authority and credit for the outcome
Create a written development plan showing how they'll be MORE capable than me in 18 months - share it with them and my manager

Productive Discomfort

When I feel the urge to highlight my contribution in meetings, count to 5 before speaking - then ask someone else to share their perspective first
When someone criticises my work or decision, pause for 10 seconds before responding - write down my defensive reaction but don't say it
Keep a daily log this week: note every time I felt defensive or wanted credit - mark it as "growth moment" and reflect on why

Most of us are Level 4. That's not failure. It's reality. The question is whether you're willing to see reality clearly enough to grow.
